EVO/3G ECU in a 6th Gen Galant
« on: October 17, 2011, 05:11:13 PM »
ok so ive been doing some research on GalantVr4 and on the DSM forums and im thinking of running either a 3g Manual or an Evo ECU in my Galant, it's already been successfully swapped into a 1g and a 6GVR4 and running great, and i wanna take advantage of the tuning abilities as well as being able to run a 8g/3g MAF in place of the 6g MAF so i can run a CAI...

I have both pinouts of my 6g ECU as well as 3g/evo pinouts and from what i was told there shouldnt be more than 5 or 6 wires that need to be swapped....

any input on which ECU i should run, i plan on boosting in the future but i am aware than NT guys have run the evo ecu in their 8g's...so i dont think it would be much different in my 6g....those who did it in 1g's and Gvr4's both said the response from the swap is unbeleivable..

You can also use the Lancer (02-05) ECU and 98-02 Mirage 4G93 ECU. As for the Lancer, it has the immobilizer and you can flash either the EVO or 3G ROM onto it. For the Mirage, it doesn't have the immobilizer but the 98-00 ECU uses the same processor as the 98/99 3KGT and 2G.

The 4 cyl M/T Eclipse ECU and Evo VIII ECU are one in the same for both pinouts & connectors used. Either one can be used honestly, if you want to find one cheap, look for an 3rd Gen Eclipse 4cyl M/T ECU as they can usually be found for less than the Evo VIII ECUs. The Eclipse ECU is great because you can run it N/A for now, then when you go boosted simply flash the Evo VIII ROM file to the ECU.

If you don't mind could you email us the info you have so far, I would love to look at it some more.

Ohh nice. Good idea with the eclipse ecu. Issue one. Immb. Issue two. Maps scaling. Issue 3 maf sensor. But all it could be fix with a tune.

Map scaling won't be an issue for N/A, when boosted you simply flash the Evo ROM file to the ECU to address that issue.

MAF sensor tables will all just need to be adjusted, all of this I am sure has been sorted out from others who have sucessfully done this now though.

here's my issue,
i wanna be able to tune the car
i'd rather spend the money on something with more potential than just a SAFC, i also wanna be able to change out the MAF so i can use a custom CAI and put the filter under the battery tray to get cooler air vs the stock airbox location....it seems to be a pretty straight forward swap, and i can grab the harness and ecu from a 3g here

Is the injector the same as a 2.4l. 232cc and latency?

Yes all 3g eclipse have a knock sensor build in on the ecu. Leave it and rewire it to ecu. U need a knock sensor to tune. Specially for a boost car.

heres the link to the EVO to DSM pinouts

The changes to get it working in the 91+ are as follows.

Evo 19- DSM 6 - 90 to 91 changed the wire for the MAF Reset from 14 to 6
Evo 43-DSM 104 - This is the clutch switch. Wired up it allows use of Modded Tephra maps which have NLS, etc.
Evo 18-DSM 67 - ISC Coils are reversed but the jury is still out on if this matters.
Evo 5-DSM 68 - See above.

In addition, you'll notice one wire (Evo 62) goes to the OBDII plug, pin 7. Look here click for the OBDII pin out. The one to use is "ISO and KWP Protocol Pins". Pin 15 does not need to be hooked up. You can get power for the OBDII plug from pin 12(DSM)/102(Evo) and ground from 13(DSM)/101(Evo).

You also need to wire pin 79(Evo) to OBDI Pin 12

Good luck bro. the car will gain more torque due to the new timing and fuel maps. The MAF and injectors will help a lot. Make sure you monitor knock. At the beginning you will see a few knocks at low rpm and around 30-50 loads since you have DOHC

I see about 35% for Load and around 50Hz on the MAS. Most of my knocks comes from the big TB and no way to adjust the Accel Enrich table.

Adjust the scaling to read more air so the injectors could be adjusted

Steady MIL, so I need to check the eprom rom as all of the connectors to it are good.  But as reference, I have around 35% Load/50Hz at idle(850 rpm) and ~92% Load/~950Hz around 6000rpm
