8th Gen Weight Reduction
«
on:
October 30, 2011, 07:26:52 PM »
This thread is to cover a comprehensive list of parts/components for our 8th Generation Galant models that can be removed, or changed out to reduce the overall vehicle weight. In order to keep this information as consistent as possible, it is important that you obtain the actual weights of the items so that this remains accurate. For instance, we don't want somebody to say "x" item saves 30lbs, when said item only weighs 15 upon weighing it.
I will be going through a number of parts to weigh at work and add to this thread. I encourage the rest of you to also add to this topic so it can be added to the original post. We are looking for the documentation on items like seats, door panels, sound deadening material, dash, fenders, hood, trunk, brackets, etc. I will categorize the list better once we start getting more information added to them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OEM Vehicle Weight
4-cyl Models - 2835lbs
V6 Models - 3178lbs
Weight specifications are not exact, multiple online sources have variances in the weight, but this should give you all a general idea of your starting weight.
Interior
Front Seat (Leather) - 42.4lbs
Rear Seat Lower - 10.2lbs
Rear Seat Upper - 21.4lbs
Radio - 2.4lbs
Glove Box Metal Plate - 2.6lbs
Trunk
Trunk Trim (Under side) - 8.4lbs
Trunk Floor Panel Trim - 6.2lbs
OEM Jack - 5.6lbs
Tire Changing Tools - 1.4lbs
Spare Tire - 28.8lbs
Engine Bay
Hood Liner - 1.4lbs
4g64 Balance Shafts - 10.4lbs
OEM Front Rotors - 12.4lbs
A/T Trans (V6) - 218lbs
Body Panels
Hood - 41lbs
Fender - 7lbs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WEIGHT INFORMATION STILL NEEDED
Seats - Leather & Cloth, Pwr - NEED WEIGHTS
Door Panels (Front & Rear) - NEED WEIGHTS
Interior Firewall Mat & Sound Deadening Material - NEED WEIGHTS
Dash - NEED WEIGHTS
Center Console - NEED WEIGHTS
Trunk - NEED WEIGHTS
Power Steering System (Complete removal brackets, pump, lines) - NEED WEIGHTS
A/C System (Complete removal, condensor, bracket, pump, lines) - NEED WEIGHTS
Misc Items - Any other weight reduction items obtain weights and add.

hmm, we could also do a checklist on each of our cars for removed parts so that we can realistically estimate the net weight of the car
I'll take the weights of the following tomorrow when I get home from school
/ denotates what I've already removed
power window motor /(from passenger rear door)
sound insulation inside each door, multipiece foam /(passenger rear door)
rear door inserts (minus the insulation)
trunk mounted cd player (including the leather cover) /
stock radio /
trunk carpet /
front floor mates
underhood insulation /
trunk floorboard (covering the spare tire) /
spare tire
compact scissor jack /
tool kit for spare tire
rear seat lower cushion (estimated 5 pounds)
rear seat back cushion
flip up arm rest
passenger side seat (estimated 35-40 pounds)
driver side power seat
the metal armor plate in the glove box (I think I know the function, either it protects the ecu if somebody tries shooting the lock to break into it or it protects the passenger's legs from the airbag) /
if possible, I'll dig up the weight of the stock exhaust

I've been hitting the gym for 2 months now I lost more than 10lbs since then. Trying to lose at least 50 pounds.
So yeah, gym/diet = infinite weight reduction for driver side.

here's the results of when I measured my stuff, saying this ahead of time, some of this stuff might be slightly heavier or lighter due to rust, accumulated dirt or humidity, also my scale might not be 100% consistent, so this is within a range
back seat lower cushion: 10.2 pounds
back seat upper cushion 21.4 pounds
rear floor mats: 1.4 pounds
passenger seat: 42.4 pounds
LS submodel radio: 2.4 pounds
stock trunk mounted cd player with cover: 8.4 pounds
trunk floor board: 6.2 pounds
spare tire scissor jack: 5.6 pounds
spare tire tool kit: 1.4 pounds
spare tire: 28.8 pounds
glove box 'armor' plate: 2.6 to 3 pounds
underhood insulation: 1.4 pounds
stock front rotor: 12.4 pounds

please take note to point out any amount of fluids that may still be in your torque converter and weigh its mounting bolts too. the fluids will distort your weight readings

I've removed the sound deadening on the floor boards and so far from most of the trunk and back seats and floor boards and passenger and driver side floorboards is about 20 Lbs.

Ben, when i recorded that weight it was far more than 20lbs. did you weigh it at all? i weighed mine and it came to nearly 50lbs. i removed everything from the firewall all the way to the trunk and most of the material on the trunk well surfaces. i still need to remove the material on the backs of the wheel wells inside the trunk.
Remember guys, we need weighted items that have been on a scale. approximations cannot give us accurate measurements. this is how i can vouch for my 2810lbs actual street weight once i weighed the car and counted up the lost pounds because of the items removed were weighed.
