Then I went through the wannabe pimp-mobile stage in the Spring of '07
Image
Image

Got in an accident that same summer and things started to change.
Image
Image

Spring of '08 the chrome ICW's and picked up the white RS Limited's along with a few other tasteful exterior enhancements, but of course ignoring the front bumper. I blame that on being distracted with the 3G Spyder I had that Spring.
Image
Image

Got rid of the 3G and turned my attention back to getting the Galant fixed. Straightened the radiator support and installed a new upper bumper support to get it back in line.
Image

Summer '08, I installed Tein's in the front, then got a new front bumper and installed the Mugen lip, and that's about where it ended before starting my 6G74 endeavor this Spring.

Glad you brought this over here too, if you need any help with the build or parts let me know. For the Brembo calipers just keep watching Ebay like I did. I had to save up the money first, but I made sure I had atleast $525 set aside for them. I ended up finding an auction for a full set for like $460 and they just needed a repaint (not a big issue).

If you want to save several hundred dollars on that surge tank let me know. I still have the material I was going to use for fabricating a similar one on my XG manifold and I could certainly fab it up for you for practically nothing. A big plus if you are staying N/a, or even if you go boosted later on the project is to pick up a set of the 75 non-mivec heads. They will take the stock 72/4 cams or even the RPW cams, but due to the head chamber size on the 75 heads it will affect the CR so you will have to factor that into the build.

I'll end up waiting a little while to get the Brembo calipers until I at least get my lower end built. My car gets put into storage this week, and I'm ordering pistons tomorrow since I found them on sale right now for $549 and simply cannot pass the deal up.

I'll have to keep you posted on that surge tank. I'll eventually need one to top off my engine build this time around, and I would appreciate that greatly.

Yeah they were. I wanted to try something different, but they just didn't stand out on such a light color like white, so I painted them black a month later. Here is a close-up of them while they were still white. I think if they were color-matched on a blue or red car, they would look much better.

Thats a good deal for pistons man, I priced them out for my build around $700 lol. Just let me know about the surge tank once you get the manifold. I haven't been to the junkyard out here in a whille (too damn cold and snow), but if I find a manifold I will set you up. They only chagre like $30 for them out here, so it's not a huge expense. The material cost for the surge was like $15-20 if I remember right, so yea like I said I could definitely save you a few bucks ;)

Yeah, I'm excited about the pistons since the regular price is $699. On the mani and surge tank, I'll wait for you to find one and I'll buy the whole setup from you whenever you come across it since I'm in no hurry, and I really do appreciate the offer.

After a while of inactivity, I'm getting somewhere again. I took the engine to work to have shuttled around to the machine shop location where it arrived today. From the sounds of it, I should have it back very soon as the machinist doesn't have much work going on at the moment. I'll keep this updated as results are made.

I was digging it at first too, until the more I started looking at it. Then realized it was a bit too subtle of a difference to me. I really wish somebody would try matched headlights on a better colored car such as Patriot Red.

So, I just received a call from the company machinist. Sounds like the crankshaft is at minimum spec, but fine. The block has been hot tanked, and should be in the process of being inspected right now. I should be getting another phone call soon with the condition of the block. For now, I just have to sit here and wait in anticipation.

Block checked out fine and the cylinders get honed tomorrow.

Matt, it's running about $150. Plus he ordered the bearings and rings which are not included in the price yet, but things are finally coming together. :)

Thats pretty reasonable man, I have heard some people are paying about $200+ ust get their block hot tanked. May have to shoot my 75 block your way if it comes to that.

Started purchasing parts for the transmission swap. Pulled from a 5-speed Eclipse GS at a local yard today. Going back Monday at open to get the shifter and cables. For now I picked up the clutch pedal, brake pedal, clutch master cylinder, reservoir, clutch lines, as well as one part I wont end up being able to use, so I will be returning the clutch slave cylinder. Don't mind the mess in the SHO's trunk but here is today's purchase. All for $42.85 :)

Thanks, I was excited to see them still on the car. I guess they are open tomorrow and I didn't even know it, so I'll be getting the shifter and cables sooner than expected. I will definitely keep an eye out for you on the "hard-to-find" parts. Checking the yard's inventory online is a ritual I swear. I've been waiting to find a 3G there forever. Send me a list of what you need and I'll look into it. Otherwise if you need anything else for any vehicle in their inventory, let me know as well. Their website is upullrparts.com. The Rosemount location is where I'll be tomorrow.

Are the 2g pedals the same as the 3g? Really though if you can find the pedals, and a clutch master cylinder up there that is cool with me. I check the two yards inventory out here but there is rarely any parts I can use for where I am going...it sucks.

Hey Matt, I looked for 2g M/T cars, but they were all A/T. I'll keep my eyes open still though. My brother and I usually go to different yards each week so we're bound to come across some things for you.

Otherwise, I figured out the yard was open today. I returned the slave cylinder I purchased yesterday, since I realized they are different from I4 to V6, and put that toward the shifter base which price difference was $7.35. Total cost so far the past 2 days, $50.20

The block and crank returned from the machine shop yesterday along with new piston rings, main bearings, rod bearings, and thrust washers. Plasti-gauged the mains and they are dead center within spec. Main cap is torqued to spec, and the piston rings are tonight's task. I'll post pictures when I have time since I have been busy between work and getting the 74 put together.

I want to see pictures of the engine build! Sounds like everything will go together pretty good man. Did they balance the rotating assembly as well? Not sure if you mentioned that already or not...

I think tonight I should have enough time to get some posted. Probably will be pretty late though. I didn't have them balance it because I'm using all stock internals, and I remember TJ once saying the 6G7x series engines are very well balanced from the factory.

Good man, we all like the pictures in these thread. Tj failed to mention the truth about these engines many times, I could almost gaurentee you that Tj's engine was not as efficient as it could be if he did not balance, even after all the forged internals he added to his build. Bj for instance had his stuff checked before balancing and the machinist he had do the work found the rotating assembly out of balance by 300+lbs, after balancing Bj's rotating assembly was knocked down to only 8lbs out of balance.

Its another expense, but if you are running high CR pistons like you plan to it will be worth your time and money to get it all balanced...The difference in engine revs will be shocking and it will rev a lot smoother throughout the powerband.

And Matt, that is interesting, I didn't know that about TJ and BJ's balancing issues. I'm not sure if I'll end up with high compression pistons. For now, I will just end up using the stock rods and pistons.

The current issue I'm coming across now is locating an oil pump for the 6G74. Nobody has a pump listed for the Diamante. My only option at this point is the Mitsubishi dealership, but they want $477, and I just cannot justify spending that much on the pump. I'm able to find a listing for an '02 Montero Sport with the 6G74, but my dilemma is determining if the block is 100% identical to the one found in the Diamante. I remember reading somewhere about crossover and non-crossover versions of the 6G74 and I'm just going in circles. I guess this is just one of those moments where I wish this was an '85 Z28 with a small block 350.

Yea man, like I said Tj hardly devulged the critical information people should have known about when building these things. Anytime you build something up like this and are searious about it balancing is a "must do" machining step. I only found out about Bjs being so far off from talking to him a couple months ago, he was also shocked that the balance was off that much. Ever watched his youtube vids? Notice how smooth and quickly his engine revs up? The High CR (11:1) helps with that, but making the revs smoother and consisten from low to high RPM is assisted from a good balance job being done. If you assemle the engine as you go now without balancing, reving the engine you will think it seems ok. When you rev something that has been balanced you will noticably feel and hear the difference from the engine.

That sucks man, I know there is some information on the 3000GT boards about the crossover and non-crossover systems. What condition is your current 74 oil pump in, or just don't have one?
