This is a follow up thread/project thread from my original introduction here.

http://www.galanttuners.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=800

Sorry, I haven't been around here much. I must own too many DSM's, if that's possible.

I've made a ton of progress, and things have popped up which need attending to. In short, rod knock, but now that the motor is out, I'm taking the opportunity to go all the way so to speak, and get everything that has been begging for my attention for so long taken care of in one shot.

To be brief, I picked up this gem, #145/2000 1/26/2009 as it looks below.

Image

As with any vehicle that is almost 20-years old, it's beauty was only skin deep, although not really too bad at all. She has spent her whole life in Orlando, FL and pretty rust free, very clean compared to many.

Still stock, I started with rims/tires. Kumho 225/45-18's on ADR 18 x 7.5" White powdercoat.

Image

Looked hideous, so I gave her a drop. Eibach 1g Pro-kit's on KYB GR-2's with a 1" spacer in the rear.

Image

After that, it just underwent general maintenance/oil changes, took it to the track a couple times in stock form.

Image

She went almost 1-year before I started upgrading stuff.

First I ditched the small crappy stock FMIC in favor of this with custom 2.5" piping, all custom work.

Image

Upgraded to an MHI Small 16g.

Image

Also, somewhere in there I put on a custom made 2.5" exhaust (soon to be 3" turbo-back), 4ws delete, and some other odds and ends.

This is how she looked as of last week. Not entirely accurate, but pretty close.

Image

Well, irregardless of having been told I bought her with a rebuilt motor (top to bottom, yeah right), 10,000 miles later (as of last week), the bottom end developed the very early sound of a rod knock.

Time for a tear down. I started Friday, 4/16.

Progress...

Image

And more progress...

Image

Image

Image

Not too bad. .020 over should take care of the scoring in the walls.

Image

Doesn't look like the head was built 10,000 miles ago, but the seller lied to me many other times besides that, so oh well, it is what it is.

Image

Head is as clean as I can get it for the time being. Not too clean at all, but I'm sure the builder will have it spotless. It will be sent off to get work done soon. 5-angle valve job, 1mm OS stainless valves, revised lifters, port-matched intake/exhaust ports, either Evo valve springs, or BC Standards and Brass valve guides.

Image

Image

These will have to wait until after the new paint/body work. Pre-facelift JDM corners (clear, just with colored bulbs), perfect for a White car.

Image

Engine and Tranny out completely, sub-frame and all.

Image

Image

Image

I accidentally bent the custom battery tie-down I made for the custom tray, I also fabbed. Oh well, no biggie. Everything else came out clean, even though I don't have a lift to use. The Jack barely got the front high enough to clear the block, but I made do. I plan to re-install the engine in the same way as to avoid scratching the fresh paint that will soon be in the bay.

Made some progress over the past few days. It is a bit of a long road ahead, but I hope to have the engine and bay done in the next couple months. Hope! I know how these projects can go.

ABS removal. It never worked anyway.

Image

Image

Big empty hole as a result. I'm sure I'll figure out something to do with the space.

Image

More emptiness.

Image

Rust spot under where the battery tray used to be. I'll stop that dead in it's tracks. POR-15 FTW!

Image

Lots more dirtiness. Probably a good 19-years of caked on grease.

Image

Progress stopped today around the time I figured it best to pull the dash out to get the rest of the harness out of the bay. I hate pulling dashes. LOL. Seems like a good task to start the day off with tomorrow.

The plan is to strip everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) out of the bay, strip the paint down, lay down primer, paint a nice fresh coat of Summit White, and get it all back together, of course with squeaky clean new parts. Being that it is rare, I want to take the time to get it good as new. It's been on hold/neglected for some time until a couple weeks back when I picked up a solid '92 Eclipse GSX to drive while the Galant goes under the knife.

The main goal is to take the time, do it right, do it once, and hopefully not have to dig into her again for many years to come.

Although my goals have changed slightly since I've owned her, I've got a good solid plan in concrete. Keeping in mind this is intended to be a daily driver (I'm not required to drive much during the day, so not your typical DD duty), the overall goal is 350HP. The small 16g is very potent and spools as fast, if not faster than the stock 14b, and will easily achieve that goal with supporting mods, so I will keep it. I'm planning on putting in Evo 9 forged pistons on 1g Rods (forged, perhaps), as well as an Evo 8/3g style MAF, 560 injectors, and most likely ECMLink, and will likely stick with the Walbro 190, and tune for a solid 15-17psi from the Small 16g.

That's all for now. I have this build thread on a few different forums at the moment and I will copy and paste here what I post everywhere else to keep it updated, and respond to any questions/comments along the way.

Thank you for taking the time to read over.

Thank you for the kind comments and the invite over to share my build. I'd love to be there in the Galant, and this build is looking to take longer and longer as I go, even though steady progress is being made. If you can, put it out further, and I'm sure nobody will be disappointed by 145.

With that said,

Not too much to share today, as my job demanded me much more than the Galant did, but I still managed to get out and make some progress. Down and dirty with some cleaning.

As seen in the previous pictures, there is a ton of caked on grease/oil/dirt in the entire bay that needs to be removed well before paint. I really need a pressure washer, but I did my best for the time being without, and made some pretty good progress. I attended to the rust on the passenger side a bit, and found it's not bad at all, on the frame rail anyway, which was my concern. I'll get on it more a bit later.

For now, some degreasing.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Scotch brite pads and superclean work wonders, would be even better with a pressure washer, but that will wait until I can get the last bit of the harness pulled. I've been procrasting pulling the rest of it, as the dash will need to come out to disconnect it. I still need to pull the steering column and brake booster as well after that is done, as the firewall being flat and clear of stuff will make life easier through the process.

I'm debating on the seam sealer at the moment. This crap at the seams.

Image

My thoughts are to remove the sealer and have the seams welded to stiffen the frame, and ground them smooth. I'm not sure I am up for the task, that's why it's up in the air. Also taking into account the safety factor and researching a bit.

Anyway, that's all for now.

Wow...you got that bay torn apart!

I plan to one day to just strip the motor bay and clean it and give it a good respray of paint...but I just want the car to be running again. On the 2nd to the last pic on the last post ..what wires are those cut next to the mount bracket?

Nice build thread so far! Could you do your hotside piping a shorter route or is that how it is? Also it's nice to see someone taking time to strip down the engine bay of a 10+ year old car and clean it up like you have.

Definitely getting there. I had some free time from work today, and wanted to get out and get more done, but it's too friggin' hot. In that heat, I get in a bad mood quick. Just waiting out the sun to move a bit to give me some shade, and I'll be getting back out there.

I really want to drive her again, but the rod noise was the final straw for me, and this Galant deserves so much better. In the end, even with the time, energy and money I will have to put in, it will be well worth the wait, the first drive will be the greatest feeling in the world. Hopefully that comes sooner than later. :)

The cut wires all run to the ABS that used to be there. No more ABS means I will no longer need them. AFAIK they run all the way back to the ABS controller in the rear, and to a 2-wire harness on each side going to the speed sensor on the front brakes. The sensors have been gone for a while as were the rings, I removed both when I did the wheel bearings, otherwise they are difficult to remove.

One of the plans before re-assembly is to go through the main harness (headlights, signals, etc.) and remove the unnecessary wiring, re-loom and tuck it all away nicely. I have thought about re-locating the fuse box, but I will be fabricating a cold air intake box which will hide it anyway.

Thank you! The FMIC pipe routing was a bit of a quick job that I just wanted done and over with at the time. It will change to some extent, and be as short as possible. Even with the small radiator I was running and slim fans, with a J-pipe on the 16g, it was a very tight squeeze. The Honda half radiator didn't do it's job as well as I would have liked (even in only 70-degree weather), so I will be using a Scirroco race radiator the next time around, which will rest right on top of the core support and tuck away well. It will also leave me with all the space I need for the piping still.

I'm still debating if I want to have new end-tanks welded on the FMIC so the in's/outs are DSM style, or having a tight 90 welded to the ends pointing up at about a 75 degree angle. Where the FMIC is mounted, the hot side has always given me the biggest headache, but this time I will get it situated right once and for all. I never have liked the big U-bend on the hot side, and it can definitely be better. I'm also thinking about having all the piping welded as one piece to eliminate most of the couplers/t-bolt clamps, if I can find a good aluminum welder anyway.

Anyway, back to work I suppose...

I actually wish I still had the stock rims, since I'm still 4-lug with the stock 3-bolt rear end, but no, I sold those with #965 and scrapped the junk that was on there. In retrospect I would have had them re-coated and the lip polished. Live and learn.

I think pretty much any 6gen or VR-4 wheel would fit your 92 however. Pretty much anything that is 4 x 114.3 bolt pattern and an offset of 42-46 and less than 18 x 8 should fit to get an idea. Lots of aftermarket options, and some OEM options as well.

I got some tear down done on the motor today, and just as I had suspected. One rod bearing looks terrible. The crank bearings don't look too hot either. Definitely time for a rebuild.

Metal particles in the oil pan. Also another interesting find in the pan.

Image

Image

This! :eek6:

Image

Don't ask me how a valve lock could find it's way into the oil pan. When I tore the head down I counted exactly 32 locks, so there is no way it's from this head. Pretty big oversight on somebody's part.

Also found metal slivers stuck in the oil pick-up screen. Looks like pieces of bearing to me.

Image

Probably from this one.

Image

I'm still unsure just by looking at the crank if it will be usable or not, but it really doesn't look too bad considering. I'd rather not have it turned, so I'll see what the machine shop says.

Image

I also made another interesting discovery by decoding the VIN on the block. The block is from a '90 GST, so that would explain why it is the stock bore, likely swapped from a totaled vehicle I would assume.

That's about all for now. I also managed to break my 30" breaker bar the first time I've ever used it. Cheap tools suck! :mad2:

Great to see an older Galant build project. You are doing a lot of great work, and going about it the best possible way too. Keep it up!

Interesting finds in the oil btw

Thank you for the compliment! I may be crazy for taking it all on at once, but I feel it will be easier in the end, and should save me from a good amount of effort when all is said and done.

It was quite an interesting find indeed. The odd part was that the motor was upside down when I pulled the pan off, I didn't even notice it until it slid down towards the bottom of the pan after I set it down. I really, really wonder how it got there, but even more so, I wonder how many places it has been, as it does look a tad banged up on the edges.

But with that said, I am glad I pulled the motor at the very first sign of bottom end noise. I may have just saved the crank, which is a good thing. The piston walls don't look bad at all either.

I should be dropping the block and crank off at the machine shop on Monday. More updates to come soon on the engine bay. In the next few days I should be pulling the front bumper, fenders, some more cleaning, sanding and a coat of primer. It may be slow going the next week, however, as work needs me and engine parts get expensive quick.

Jesse..how many miles did the motor have before the tear down? **Probably don't know..just read a little more, the motor wasn't the original motor in the Galant**

What kind of upgrades are you doing to the bottom end?

I have no clue how many miles it had on it. When I bought the car I was told the motor was rebuilt top-bottom, right then and there I could tell the bottom end didn't appear to have been touched but the head was spotless, so I didn't complain too much at the time. I'm guessing it was a salvage pull that they went through real quick and slapped in the car. It now makes sense why the oil pan was leaking a bit, a crappy cork gasket was used, and the oil pan has been dented. The VIN number most certainly doesn't match. I'm thinking the original block is now in #965, but I need to get in touch with it's owner.

So far, a running list of what I will be putting in the bottom end:

Evo 9 Piston and ring set, 8.8:1 compression
1g stock rods
ACL Tri-metal rod/main bearing set
OEM Front cover gear set, gears, pump seal, crank seal, bs seal, gasket
OEM Rear main gasket
OEM Rear main seal
OEM OFH gasket
OEM Front case plug
OEM Water pump, gasket and o-ring set (although others would suffice)
OEM Crank pulley
OEM Crank pulley bolt set
BWD Knock sensor
OEM Oil pickup/strainer
OEM style Oil pan
Oil pan drain bolt
OEM dipstick
OEM dipstick tube o-ring
OEM dipstick tube
OEM timing belt
OEM tensioner pulley/idler pulley
OEM Flywheel bolts
OEM timing belt cover (lower)

There are parts I could skimp on, reuse, or find a cheaper alternative, but I firmly believe in "do it once, do it right", and I am going for a bottom end that can hold up for a long time to come. The running total on the bottom end is $1857.00 figuring shipping, etc., not including the machine work, which really isn't bad at all. If you figure labor hours, it would be triple, so considering I am comfortable doing my own work, I don't feel so bad and neither does my wife.

I may add to that list the AMS balance shaft eliminator kit, I have the stub shaft kit, but have heard they can strain the oil pump case and it's better to run a BS that is machined down instead. It is a bit pricey, however, especially since I don't have a core to send them it would run $330, but well worth the peace of mind.

I'm not sure I mentioned earlier in this thread, but the plans on the head are Evo springs and retainers, Polished Stainless 1mm over valves, 5 angle valve job and port matched intake/exhaust. Considering I'm not going for a ton of power, I would just be doing a stock rebuild on the head, and would be just fine, but luckily I have a good friend that can do all the head work for about the price of a stock rebuild from the machine shop.

The block is all stripped ready to go to the machine shop.

Image

Image

Now the metal slivers on the pickup definitely make sense now. The center main bearing was SHOT!

Image

The crank isn't bad at all. I think I caught it just in time.

Image

I can't wait to get the block back and start hoarding some parts, and start getting it all back together.

I dropped the ball a bit the past couple of days.

The engine was dropped off at the machine shop Monday. Unsure if the crank can simply be polished or not, it may need to be taken .010-.020 over. which isn't a problem since the nitrate coating goes about .030 deep, but I'm unsure if I will chance it, since I may be shooting for 500HP or more in the long run with this motor, and possibly in the Galant.

I got a great amount of work done today, but was on a mission, the camera wasn't handy and I got zero pics. Sorry. I'll snap some tomorrow when I start again, and be sure to keep it handy. Needless to say, the engine bay is now completely ready for prep work and paint soon to follow.

Its ok Jesse...sometimes life takes more importance. I haven't been able to work on my cars for about 2 weeks now...hopefully I will be able to either tommorrow of friday hopefully.

Are you still running the 3 bolt rear in the Galant? If so...you planning on upgrading to a 4 bolt LSD?

Yep, always gotta get the bills paid. I always if anything try to put in at least an hour in every day. I know if I don't at the least commit that hour I will never finish.

I'm still mulling over a 5-lug swap and swapping in a 4-bolt LSD if I can find one. The main reason I would like to go 5-lug is the variety of brake rotor options, and much better wheel options as well. Plus I never have felt comfortable on 4-lug wheels when the Galant is a couple hundred pounds heavier than the Eclipse and it has 5-lugs. I believe I already have the front 5-lug spindles, provided the ones from my old Eclipse GS will fit, and they should, so it's just a matter of finding the LSD rear, which can be a bit tricky.

By the time I get to that section of the car, I'm sure I'll have found one.

Thanks! It's making some progress.

I've made some progress over the past few days, but little in the way of pictures, as it's mostly boring work that seems to drag on and on. As I noted above, the engine bay is stripped the rest of the way. Nothing left to do there except for some more cleaning, then more cleaning, then a meticulous final clean to make sure the primer sticks well, then the paint. Of course I will post pictures of the painting process.

This evening I've been working on the sub-frame, cross members and motor mounts. I've spent a solid 3 days a couple hours at a time de-greasing them and prepping for primer. They are ready, except for the big sub-frame unit, which my wife will work at some more tomorrow to get perfectly clean.

I'm being particularly thorough with the prep work since I will be shooting them with a gloss black and high-temp clear-coat. In stock form they come painted with a Satin. I figure with a base and clear, they should be more durable and resistant to oils. It's a small detail, that will seldom be seen, but I want every aspect of her to shine, even when on a lift.

Once the subframe is done, I'll be throwing in some Energy Suspension sub-frame bushings, as the ones that were in there are clearly at the end of their life.

It's been a long week, and I've been running a bit short on time to spend with the Galant.

I did manage to get a coat of paint on most of the sub-frame parts and motor mounts.

I'll be working on the bay some tomorrow, and hopefully ready for some prep and primer

No word from the machine shop yet, so I will be focusing on getting the bay looking spotless over the next couple weeks.

Oooh! I love new parts. I can't wait to have the head done.

1mm oversize intake valves, standard exhaust valves, all stainless.

Not much more progress to add unfortunately. It's been a very long week. :(

It's like christmas when new parts come in lol. Good to see you went to an oversized valve setup instead of just OE replacements, always good to do the additional enhancements the first time.

It really is like Christmas, but not, because unlike Christmas, I actually do get gifts! (LOL, those with a family would understand).

I'm quite happy with the choice of valves. Although I have wandered back and forth on the power goals I am setting, deep down I know I am overbuilding for a reason.

The piston choice has changed as well. The Evo pistons will hold well, and I would be quite happy with them, but in pricing it out, with machining wrist pins and all involved, price wise, Ross forged pistons fit the bill much better. The rod choice is Eagle Forged Steel rods. I considered Aluminum, but I am looking for longevity with this build, and Aluminum will not fit the bill for a somewhat daily driver. I've also been wandering back and forth between the Evo valve springs and the BC's. Evo springs are basically no better than stock, only lighter, and I would like to be able to rev to 8k or more, so still working that out on paper.

Overall, and the parts list does keep changing, when all is said and done, the bottom end and head will hold a good amount of power. Although the initial goal is 350-400, I know I will want to push further, and I expect this motor to last.

Anyway, again, I am getting a bit ahead of myself here, but planning IS good.

And some boringness on the way. LOL. The plans later on this morning are to get some finishing cleanup in the engine bay, a coat of primer or two, and I'll see what else transpires thereafter.

The person that will be building my head has had a death in the family, and is way behind on his projects as a result. I sent him my condolences, and no rush on the head of course. I have much more work to do in the mean time.

PLENTY to keep me busy for the time being. Before I start the paint in the bay, I will also be removing the fenders and front bumper.

I'm also planning a fresh paint job on the exterior of the vehicle. The way I see it, if it is going to be down, I might as well be thorough and tackle everything that is staring me in the face at once.

More picture updates today, I promise!

Awsome progress Jesse. I plan to sandblast some of the sub frame parts and crossmembers when I remove them to replace the clutch. The parts came out great!!

I need to get on the ball..I have been slacking lately, but its because we have been house shopping the past few weeks too. I forgot how stressful it is shopping for a house.

Thank you for the compliment! More sub-frame stuff I got done today.

Couple little runs, no biggie. I'll go back through and color-sand once it cures, buff it out a bit. Should look great in the finished bay. :) Oh, but the bay is nowhere near refinished. Still trying to get my hands on a solid Summit White match in a Urethane base with a clear. I want the paint to hold up for a very long time. I should finally get into the bay tomorrow and finish the cleaning/prep work for paint.
