A twist on breaking in a new engine...

Since this doesn't fit specifically to the forced induction, or naturally aspirated sections, I felt it was suitable for this section. The link below will take you to another website with some really good information, and photos of pistons that were in engines broken in based on manufacturer's suggestions, and "Motoman's method. The pictures really speak for themselves and the information posted makes pretty good sense of engine break in. Be sure to read the entire page, it has a lot of common questions people may ask and answers to them.

this is how i learned breaking a new engine in should be done and an old buddy of mine argued with me for a while about it...i'm sticking to my guns. it makes for a better seal. especially a FI build this will be the most important :geek:

its always going to be argued about the way to break in a motor. seems like the easy break in most commonly accepted but my buddy and dad have always said break in the car like its meant to be driven

its funny, i tried taking it easy on my last build and saw a lot of the characteristics that the article showed from doing just that. well i guess i know how this new motor is getting broken in. with a foot all the way to the ankle in her ass!!

I wonder if beating on the new motor for a few hundred miles and then changing the oil + filter again will help any.

After doing a lot of engine rebuilds (mostly the V8s) and seeing the wear and carbon build up this made sense to me, but like I posted originally I was still a little skeptical. When you don't have all of the information, such as what was published on that article, a lot of people will stick to the "traditional" 500-1000 mile break-in periods. I am hoping that I can do this type of break-in procedure on my build as well, but the tuning portion is my only concern to make sure it doesn't start out lean or excessive knock...but I suppose the additional fine tuning will take care of that and I can still do this break-in procedure.
