blown engine?

Postby 00galant00es » Sat Feb 06, 2010 5:36 pm

My timing belt snapped (both of them) and we think it bent some valves. We have replaced the timing belts and crankshaft sensor, haven't tried starting it yet, but wouldn't start up before after replacing the belts (tried, but couldn't, like it didn't have good spark plugs even though it has new plugs in it.) When the belts snapped, all my car did was stall. I didn't hear a clank or anything. We thought it was originally my altenater. Tried a compression test, wasn't so good, but are trying to get the valve cover off and take a look inside. The valve cover is seized on there right now.

Now, if the engine does have bent valves, does that mean i need a new engine? I thought you could just replace the valves (It's a 4 cyl BTW, 2000 Galant ES). If it does need a new engine, am I only able to use a 4g64 from Mitsubishi, or do other car companies use the same engine? The car only has 155,000 miles on it and ran perfect before this. I surely dont want to junk this beauty.

you should be able to get the 4g64 from 500 to 1400 from a local salvage yard. Most even offer a 1 year start up warranty. The motor can be found in 3rd gen eclipse and the dodge stratus I believe. Side note your motor made it to 150k before loosing the timing belt.. not bad at all!!
Motivation..Doing anything is possible once you motivate yourself to get it done.

Now if I can only motivate myself to swap the clutch.

If your timing belt snapped its most likely you have bent valve...very few are lucky enough to get away w/o any bent valves. A compression test will confirm bent valves...unless you remove the cylinder head and see it yourself. If the valves in the head are bad and nothing major to the pistons then you can just get away with rebuilding the head, but in most cases the pistons don't get spared.

Like what Mante said...your best bet is to buy another 4G64 from another Galant, 3g Eclipse or Stratus and drop it right in. Now if you were planning to build the motor then might as well take the carnaged motor you have now and rebuild it.

155,000 miles on original timing belt is pretty dayam good if you look at it in a positive way. :D

same thing happened to my old v6. just replace the heads, it should be working again. do a compression test like others have suggested before you jump the gun. more than likely thats the problem. while you have it apart you might want to think about replacing rings and stuff.

I just picked up another motor instead and swapped it old.. my old v6 is now my turbo build :D

if your saying the compression is really low then yea, you bent valves.

easiest way is to find a decent head at a junk yard and swap that in. you could rebuild your head but it might come out to be more expensive.

make sure you change out the balance shaft belt too.

Just checking the status of your situation with your Galant.

Did you do a compression test to confirm for bent valves or removed the cylinder and and visually inspected?
